Good People at Penn State Did The Right Thing

By: DrNick:

The Penn State Board of Trustees absolutely did the right thing in firing the President Spanier and long time football coach Joe Paterno. The public image of PennState has been redeemed with these firings. Hopefully a lesson has been learned that can now be transferred to other institutions, and most especially, the Roman Catholic Church.

The lesson is this. In the words of publisher Susan Matthews of “Catholics4Change” in the Philadelphia area, “football does not trump child abuse”. No institution should ever allow its leaders however famous and successful to continue in their jobs when they have deliberately overlooked the care of innocent children. Penn State took a strong and clearly decisive moral position. GO PENN STATE!!

Does it not bother the average good Catholic to see our church leaders run to insurance companies and lawyers to protect themselves and their bank accounts over the welfare of children?

Does it not bother the average good Catholic to see our church leaders pressure the families of those abused to keep silent?

Does it not bother the average good Catholic to see their local priest afraid of challenging their bishops? Grown men hiding to save their own skins and pensions is shameful.

Dose it not bother the average good Catholic to see their bishops smear the reputations of the victims publicly over the reputations of guilty priest predators?

Dose it not bother the average good Catholic to hear and read that bishops and chancellors and monsignors skillfully moved predator priests from one parish to another only to have more children victimized?

Does it not matter to the average good Catholic that bishops, after admitting making poor choices, still continue to lead their local churches?

Does it not matter to the average Catholic that no bishop has been fired for protecting predator priests?

GUESS WHAT? The tide is now turning and the reaction of many good people and, hopefully, the media and the local politicians will be to pressure the Catholic Church to do the right thing in the future.

Please add your thought and comments in this forum. Looking forward to your feedback. You must have some reaction. Lets hear from you.

I hope commentary like this gets on the front pages of The New York Times and every other major and minor newspaper in the country!

“Holy Mother Church” should learn to take lessons from the secular world! Frequently, that is exactly where we find the moral leadership that we say we believe in. Unfortunately, the official Church often perceives itself to be above the rest of society and thus thinks that all moral lessons flow only from within its own closed system. We all know what happens to closed systems!

I wonder if the story and lessons of Penn State will find their way to even one Diocesan newspaper. I wonder what the conversation among bishops is today. Hmmmmm.

  2. I lent my strong support to this fine post, then tried editing and lost it. On our part, let us be more vigilant to prevent the availability of such abuse in the first place, God help us all!
